A Mural that Takes a Stand Against Discrimination

Students at the Maxine Greene High School for Imaginative Inquiry have been working on a mural honoring the legacy of activist, educator, and philosopher, Maxine Greene, while bringing attention to discrimination in their community. Students chose to specifically focus on discrimination based on race, gender, and sexual orientation; issues that have directly impacted their lives in some way. The mural was also a special collaboration with artist and activist, Laura Alvarez, and guest student artists from across the city from Elmhurst, Queens, who were also deeply committed to the mural's anti-discrimination message. As part of this mural project, some of our students led a storytelling, zine-making workshop for several middle school girls at the Girl Positive! workshop in Jackson Heights, Queens this past month. The mural will be unveiled during a community art showcase at the school on May 24th.
