International Human Rights Day Assembly for Middle Schoolers

On Wednesday, December 7th, ARTE presented an assembly on International Human Rights Day at the Sheridan School in Washington, D.C. for 100 middle schoolers. During the assembly, students discussed the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948. Thus, Human Rights Day is held on December 10th every year to promote the rights and freedoms of people everywhere across the globe.

During the assembly, students had meaningful discussions about and reflected on some of the 30 articles with the UDHR using the arts, including song, dance, performance, and drawing. Some of the rights students presented on included: the right to education, the right to equality, the right to protection in another country, the right to marriage and family, and the right to a nationality, among others.

At the end of the assembly, ARTE asked the crowd of middle schoolers to consider what human rights issues were most important to them and think about the ways they can take action this International Human Rights Day.
