"I Am A Child" Middle School Workshop

This past month, ARTE led an interactive workshop in collaboration with the Lower Manhattan Community Middle School (M.S. 896). ARTE engaged 136 students at the school who had been reading Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk to Water, a book focusing on the true story of Salva Dut, a Sudanese Lost Boy and former refugee. ARTE's art workshop gave students an opportunity to creatively explore the rights of children and the impacts of war on children through the creation of individual wheatpasted canvases, soon to be transformed into a collaborative wheatpasted photograph poster with the message, I Am A Child. ARTE's workshop enriched the context of the book, asking students to explore what it means to be a child and what it means to stand up when the rights of children are being violated.
